Most fleets already have GPS trackers. Fewer get real value from them beyond “where is the truck now?”. The biggest savings — fuel, tyres, maintenance and safety — come from the sensors around the GPS, and from seeing all of them in one place.
What each sensor adds
- GPS tracking — location, speed, routes, stops and geofences. The backbone for ETAs and route optimisation.
- Fuel-level sensors — detect sudden drops (theft or leakage), track consumption per trip and reconcile fuel cards against actual fills.
- TPMS (tyre-pressure monitoring) — under-inflated tyres waste fuel and fail early. Live alerts prevent blowouts and extend tyre life.
- CAN bus / J1939 and OBD-II — engine RPM, coolant temperature, fault codes and odometer straight from the vehicle's computer — the raw material for predictive maintenance.
- AI dashcams — on-device AI spots tailgating, lane departure and pedestrians on the road, and drowsiness, phone use or missing seatbelts in the cab, alerting the driver instantly and saving video of incidents.
Why one platform beats five apps
Separate vendor portals for each device mean separate logins, separate alerts and no joined-up picture. When the data is combined, the insights multiply: a fuel drop with the engine off and the vehicle stationary at night is theft; harsh braking plus a dashcam clip explains an insurance claim; rising coolant temperature plus a fault code schedules a workshop visit before a breakdown.
Use the devices you already have
You don't need to rip and replace. Most existing GPS and OBD devices can be integrated through their APIs or data protocols; new sensors are added only where they pay back fastest — usually fuel sensors on long-haul vehicles and TPMS on heavy axles.
What results look like
In an e-commerce last-mile fleet we worked with, combining GPS IoT, AI route planning and a driver app lifted on-time delivery from 70–75% to 92–96%, cut daily route planning from 1–2 hours to 10–15 minutes and reduced speeding incidents by 55–70%. Read the full case study →
A practical rollout
- Audit the devices already fitted and connect them to one platform.
- Add fuel and TPMS sensors to the vehicles with the highest running costs.
- Pilot AI dashcams on one depot and use the clips for coaching, not punishment.
- Turn on predictive-maintenance alerts once a few months of CAN data have been collected.
